Cobra Age Eligibility Guidelines
What is Cobra Travel?
Cobra Travel is a spring only travel lacrosse program based in Howard County. Cobra Travel teams play in the Maryland Youth Lacrosse Association (MYLA), which is made up of teams from the greater Baltimore area.
Who is Cobra Travel intended for?
Cobra Travel is intended for athletes who want a higher level of lacrosse instruction, commitment, and play, but don’t want to commit to a year round club lacrosse program.
How much does Cobra Travel cost?
Cobra Travel fees are approximately $350 per year. $200 is due at registration, and a $150 commitment fee is due at the time of acceptance of a spot on a Cobra roster. Uniforms are additional and last year the cost was $58. Cobra Travel typically uses the same uniforms year to year so only new players and those that outgrow their uniforms need to buy new ones. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify.
Do you have to try out for Cobra Travel?
Yes, tryouts take place in September and October and consist of two days or nights of evaluations. Cobra Travel tryouts are open to everyone and teams are made up of the players who score highest in the tryouts. Returning Cobra Travel players are not guaranteed a spot on a Cobra Travel team. Cobra Travel coaches are not selected until after tryouts to ensure that the tryouts are fair to everyone. Players who do not make a Cobra Travel team are automatically rolled in to the HC Lax rec lacrosse program.
When are Cobra Travel Tryouts?
Cobra tryouts are listed under the "about Cobra" on the website. Everyone who registers will receive a numbered pinnie to wear to tryouts. Players keep these pinnies regardless of tryout outcomes. How many Cobra Travel teams are there?
The number of Cobra Travel teams varies depending on the number of players who tryout and the skill level of those players. Cobra Travel teams compete at the A and B levels in the MYLA league. The Cobra Travel director and tryout evaluators determine what level Cobra Travel teams will compete in.
What ages are Cobra Travel teams?
Cobra Travel teams compete in MYLA at the Tyker (2nd and 3rd grade), Lightning (4th and 5th grade), Midget (6th and 7th grade) and Junior (8th grade) Levels.
How long is the Cobra Travel season?
Cobra Travel teams start practicing the last weekend in February or first weekend in March and play their last games in the first or second weekend of June.
When and where to Cobra Travel teams practice?
In the pre-season, which last lasts from the end of February to the first weekend in April, teams practice up to 4 times a week on Howard County turf fields. These practices may be Saturday, Sunday, and two weeknights. During the regular season, which lasts from the first weekend in April to the first or second weekend in June, teams practice twice a week (weeknights only) on grass fields in Howard County.
How many games to Cobra Travel teams play?
Cobra Travel teams play a 10 game regular season MYLA schedule (Tyker only plays 8 games). Midget and Junior teams that qualify for playoffs will play up to three additional playoff games ending in the league championship. There are no playoffs for the Tyker and Lightning age groups. All teams also play in one or two local tournaments in March. These typically consist of 2 or 3 games per tournament and are usually in Howard or Baltimore County. Cobra Travel teams also play in the LaxSplash tournament the weekend after Memorial Day. Teams each play three games and may play more if they qualify for the tournament playoffs. These games are all on Baltimore County fields. Some teams also choose to play in the Beach Lax tournament in Ocean City the weekend after LaxSplash.
Who do Cobra Travel teams play?
Cobra Travel teams play against other rec councils in the surrounding Baltimore area. Some teams we typically play are Catonsville, Lutherville, Bel Air, Churchville, Havre de Grace, Hickory Fountain Green, Reisterstown, Towson, Perry Hall, Kelly Post, North Carroll, Westminster, Fallston, and others.
Where to Cobra Travel teams travel to?
During the MYLA season Cobra Travel teams play their home games on Howard County turf fields and travel to fields around Baltimore to play their away games. Preseason Tournaments and LaxSplash games are in Howard County and at other fields around the Baltimore area. Some teams play in BeachLax in Ocean City.
What level of commitment is required?
Cobra Travel players are expected to be highly committed to their Cobra Travel team during the spring season. While we understand that players have other commitments, we expect Cobra Travel to be a priority during the spring season.
What is the difference between Cobra Travel and Club Lacrosse?
Cobra Travel teams play in the spring only and compete against teams from other rec councils in the Baltimore area. Club teams play in the spring, summer, and fall and play against other club teams from Maryland and surrounding states. Some club teams will also travel across country to play in tournaments.
While each club team has a different cost structure, Cobra Travel costs significantly less than club programs.
All Cobra Travel players will play a minimum of 1/3 of each game. Club teams typically do not have a minimum playing time requirement.
What is the difference between Cobra Travel and HC Lax rec lacrosse?
Cobra Travel starts practice one month earlier than rec teams and practices 2-4 times a week, compared to 1-2 times a week for rec teams. Cobra Travel costs approximately $325 per year, rec costs $175 per year. The MYLA teams Cobra Travel plays against are made up of players from all around the Baltimore area, while rec teams are all made up of Howard County Players. Cobra Travel teams play in pre season and end of season tournaments, rec teams do not play in tournaments. You have to tryout and be selected to play on a Cobra Travel team, there are no tryouts for rec.
How are HoCo Club Club and Cobra Travel related?
Cobra Travel and HoCo Club are both Howard County Lacrosse Programs (HCLP). Even though both programs are under the HCLP umbrella, the Cobra Travel and HoCo Club Club programs are run and operate independently of each other and each have different program directors. HoCo Club and Cobra Travel tryouts are separate from each other and players from one program are not given preference when trying out for the other program. Cobra Travel players are not given preferential placement when HoCo Club Club teams are selected and HoCo Club Club players are not given preferential placement when Cobra Travel teams are selected.
Cobra Refund Policy
Fee includes $200 for registration and $20 (nonrefundable) for reversible numbered tryout jersey; all players who register will receive the jersey to keep, regardless of final tryout results. Players who are offered a position on a Cobra team have two (2) weeks from the date that the final results for that age group are posted on www.hclacrosse.com to request a refund. A 25% administrative fee will be applied after registering but before that date. After that date all players who are not on a Cobra roster will be transferred into the HC Lax recreational league and will be bound by the HC Lax refund policy (a 25% administrative fee is applied to refund requests if made by Jan 16. Refund requests between Jan 17 and Mar 1 will be at 50%. No refunds after Mar 1.)
